New Knitting Patterns for October 2023

October is my favorite month to get into the knitting spirit. As the colors of the world around us start to change, and there is a bite in the air every morning, all I can find myself thinking about is wools the color of the changing leaves and scrumptious cardigans to live in until I come out of my hibernation in the Spring.

This October did not disappoint with the new patterns released by knitwear designers all over the world. It was so exciting to see all the new designs that came out this month, and dream about knitting them for the rest of Fall. Gathered here are my favorite selection of new designs from this month. I hope you find your next cast on in one of these beauties!

Paul Cardigan by Moreca Knit

This vibrant cardigan immediately got a top spot on my to-knit list when I first saw a picture on Instagram. It has an intriguing construction with saddle shoulders, and a classic shape that would be easy to add to so many outfits. It has an end of silk/mohair yarn in it to add the perfect amount of fluff, and looks amazing in a pop of color, or would make a great classic with something more neutral.

Compleat Cowl by Olga Buraya-Kefelian

This dazzling design by the expert on pleats and origami knitting, Olga Buraya-Kefelian, is sure to be a stunning addition to your knitted wardrobe. It gently collapses around the neck, but expands into an intricate pleated pattern that is unique and modern.

Hazel by Sloane Rosenthal

This gorgeous three color shawl by Sloane Rosenthal is part of Hudson & West Co’s newest collection. Hudson & West have a lovely assortment of American yarns, and they work with independent designers to publish collections that best show off their own yarns. Hazel looks like an engaging knit with the stripes of different colored to create geometric patterns. I think it looks great as pictured in neutral colors, but would also be a great pattern to add a pop of color to your Fall/Winter wardrobe.

Figures by Audrey Borrego

Figures by Audrey Borrego is a modern take on the concept of a classic colorwork cardigan. The pattern is groovy and enchanting, and seems like it would be such a satisfying knit. It looks great as pictured with the ecru background and black motifs, but I think this would look intriguing in a more subtle, low contrast color combo. It is knit with Sandnes Garn Peer Gynt, which is a popular and affordable 100% wool yarn, so the yarn could be easily substituted for another wool base.

Wildwood Shawl by Melody Hoffmann

I love all of Melody Hoffmann’s patterns because they perfectly capture a whimsical, natural aesthetic, and her design style is so strong that her designs fit so cohesively together. The Wildwood Shawl fits right in with her style and brand so well, and not only does it look fun to knit, it is made with the unspun wool Nutiden from Höner och Eir, which is one of my favorite yarns to knit with right now. It creates a lusciously soft fabric, so I know this shawl would be perfect to wrap up in for a long winter.

Wrap it Up Dress by Friday Knits

Knit dresses are so cool because with the time spent into knitting a hand knit dress, they are not seen so often. For myself, a dress pattern would need to be mindless enough that I could spend hours watching shows while knitting, but also engaging enough to keep my interest throughout the pattern. The Wrap it Up Dress is the perfect balance of simple yet engaging with the elegant skirt and cross body shaping.

Amsel / Merle (adult sweater) by Sjöfn Kristjánsdóttir

This top down raglan pullover is a gorgeous allover lace sweater knitting pattern. The lace pattern will be easy to remember and looks amazing in both variegated or solid yarn. I love this classic shape with a unique and delicate touch allover with the lace stitch.

An Italian Autumn Cowl by An Italian Knitter

This beautiful and easy garter stitch cowl is the perfect Fall accessory. It is knit with 2 strands of fingering yarn held together. The pattern suggest holding 2 ends of the same yarn together, but this would be a good opportunity to add a strand of mohair, or 2 different yarns together to create a marled effect.

Sibling Sweater My Size by Laura Penrose

© Laura Penrose

Laura Penrose of the fabulous Penrose Knits podcast on Youtube has released this really cute pullover to match her child size pattern for the sibling sweater. This is a must knit as it is so easy to pair with so many different outfits, and you can make multiple in different types of fibers to have one for each season. I can’t wait to cast this one on!

Clay Sweater by Ozetta

© Ozetta : Hailey Smedley

I have always loved Ozetta’s pullover and cardigan patterns, and the Clay Sweater is another amazing design. The subtly stitch texture adds some interest to the more basic silhouette. My favorite part is the beautiful sloped shoulder shaping on the back panel. Not only will that sit really nicely on your shoulders, but it is interesting and looks fun to knit!
