Seed Stitch

A white hand knit fabric with an allover pebble texture that is knit by alternating knit and purl stitches every stitch and every row.

Seed stitch is an easy but beautiful stitch that is commonly used in traditional Aran and Fisherman sweater designs. The stitch pattern alternates between knits and purls to create a pebble like texture. This stitch works the best with a yarn that has good stitch definition, and a solid color to show off the texture. It can be worked with an odd or even number of stitches, so there are instructions for both below.

With an even number of stitches:

Row 1 (RS): *Knit 1, purl 1; repeat from * to the end of the row.

Row 2 (WS): *Purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 1-2 for desired length.

With an odd number of stitches:

Row 1 (RS): Knit 1, *purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * to the end of the row.

Row 2 (WS): Knit 1, *purl 1, knit 1; repeat from * to the end of the row.

Repeat rows 1-2 for desired length.
